How Can I Manage Morning Sickness?

Morning sickness is a common symptom experienced by many women during pregnancy. It can be overwhelming and debilitating, but there are things you can do to manage it. Here are 10 tips on how to handle morning sickness:

Eat small, frequent meals

Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day can help keep your blood sugar levels stable and prevent nausea. Try eating every 2-3 hours and keep snacks on hand, such as crackers or fruit. Also- try eating crackers or something when you first wake up!

Stay hydrated

Dehydration can worsen nausea, so it is important to stay hydrated. Sip water, ginger tea, or other clear fluids throughout the day to help alleviate symptoms.

Avoid trigger foods

Foods that are high in fat, fried, spicy, or acidic can trigger nausea. Pay attention to which foods make you feel worse and try to avoid them.

Get plenty of rest

Fatigue can exacerbate morning sickness, so it is important to get plenty of rest. Take naps when you can and prioritize sleep at night.

Try ginger

Ginger has been shown to help alleviate nausea. You can try drinking ginger tea, taking ginger supplements, or adding fresh ginger to your meals. There are also several ginger drops, gummies, or other forms you can get (i.e. on Amazon).

Avoid strong smells

Strong smells can trigger nausea quickly, so it is important to avoid them whenever possible. Try to stay away from areas with strong odors or ask someone else to cook if the smell bothers you. Remove triggers from your environment when you can do so. You can also get a citrus essential oil (doTerra) and diffuse it or place it on a cloth and keep it close to you for relief of smells.

Use acupressure

Acupressure has been shown to help alleviate nausea. You can try using acupressure bands on your wrists on pressure point P-6. This is a very inexpensive and effective option during pregnancy.

Practice relaxation techniques

Stress can exacerbate morning sickness, so it is important to practice relaxation techniques. Try deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help alleviate symptoms.

Consider alternative therapies

Alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy, may help manage morning sickness. Talk to your healthcare provider about your options and which therapies may be right for you.

Talk to your healthcare provider

If your morning sickness is severe or impacting your ability to function, talk to your midwife or healthcare provider. They may be able to prescribe medication or offer other treatment options.

Morning sickness can be difficult to manage, but there are things you can do to alleviate symptoms. Eat small, frequent meals, stay hydrated, avoid trigger foods, and get plenty of rest. Try ginger, acupressure, and relaxation techniques, and talk to your healthcare provider about alternative therapies or medication if needed. Remember that morning sickness is a common symptom of pregnancy and most likely will decrease as the pregnancy progresses, specifically as you get into the second trimester.
